A Bible Study on Matthew 5:38-42
Have you ever read Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 5:38-42 and wondered what He meant when He said to "turn the other cheek"? At face value, it may seem like a call to passive submission or even being a doormat in the face of injustice. But when we take a closer look, diving into the cultural and historical context of Jesus’ words, we discover something far more profound: a call to stand up for ourselves in a way that breaks the cycle of revenge and brings transformative justice.
Let’s start by reading the passage together: Matthew 5:38-42 (ESV):
“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.”
Understanding the Context
To fully grasp what Jesus is saying, we need to step into the cultural and historical backdrop of the time.
Eye for an Eye: This concept, also found in Exodus 21, Leviticus 24, and Deuteronomy 19, established justice through proportional retribution. It was not about revenge but about ensuring that punishments fit the crime. It sought to limit excessive retribution and maintain fairness.
Turning the Cheek: In Jewish culture, a backhand slap to the right cheek was a deliberate insult—a way to demean and shame someone. By turning the other cheek, the individual was not submitting but instead reclaiming their dignity. It forced the offender to reconsider their actions and acknowledge the equality of the one they tried to humiliate.
Going the Extra Mile: Roman soldiers could legally compel a civilian to carry their gear for one mile. Jesus’ radical suggestion to carry it two miles wasn’t about submission; it was a power move. It exposed the oppression while demonstrating unexpected generosity, forcing the soldier to confront their own actions.
Giving the Cloak: In Jewish law, a cloak was considered essential and often protected even in legal disputes. By offering both the tunic and the cloak, the victim exposed the injustice of the situation, forcing the oppressor to reflect on their greed.
Key Principles
This passage isn’t about passivity or simply letting people take advantage of us. It’s about responding to evil in a way that restores justice, reveals truth, and disrupts cycles of revenge.
Here are some key takeaways:
Justice Is About Restoration: Biblical justice focuses on restoring Shalom—wholeness and peace—not on punishment or revenge.
Stand Firm, but Differently: Jesus challenges us to resist evil not through retaliation, but through creative, nonviolent action grounded in love.
Transform the Oppressor: By responding in ways that reveal their wrongdoing, we give others the opportunity to reflect, repent, and change.
Application Questions
Reflect on the following questions to apply this teaching to your own life:
Are there areas in your life where you are tempted to repay evil for evil?
How might God be calling you to respond differently?
How does understanding the cultural context of “turning the other cheek” shift your perspective on standing up for yourself or others?
What might it look like for you to pursue justice and restoration in your relationships, workplace, or community?
Living It Out
To live out Jesus’ teaching, we need to be intentional about seeking wisdom, acting with love, and standing for what is right without becoming entangled in cycles of revenge. Justice, as Jesus taught, is not about punishment—it’s about restoring what was lost and sustaining SHALOM.
Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:38-42 are not a call to weakness but a call to strength and wisdom. Standing up for yourself and others doesn’t mean retaliating or perpetuating harm. It means creatively and courageously responding in ways that reflect God’s justice and love.
