Purpose doesn’t become real until you stop holding back
There comes a moment in every archer’s process when the bow is steady, the aim is set, the breath is calm, and all that’s left is the release.
It’s the most intimidating part of the entire shot. Not the stretch, the aim or even the uncertainty of the wind.
It’s the moment when the arrow actually leaves your hands.
That moment requires trust...deep trust. And I believe it's because once the arrow is released, you can’t control its flight.
That is where many people get stuck.
We believe we are stuck in preparation or learning, but it's actually in the releasing.
We overthink and are hesitant. (Can anyone relate?)
We wait for conditions to be perfect so we can feel ready.
But readiness is rarely a feeling. It’s a choice.
And the release is where that choice becomes real.
🌿When I Held Onto the Bow Too Long
There was a season when I felt like I was holding an arrow I wasn’t brave enough to release.
It was when I finished writing my first book, The Journey.
I still remember sitting with the early manuscript and the nerves that came with that, thinking:
Who am I to write this?
What will people think about it?
What if I wrote something wrong and don't realize it.
I had already walked through years of healing, hardship, trauma, and rebuilding. Writing the book was hard, but I wouldn't say it was the hardest part.
Letting other people read it was. Putting myself out there for people to judge was.
Letting it leave my hands? Terrifying.
I wanted to hold onto that bow forever. Not because I didn’t believe in the message, but because releasing it meant it was no longer mine to protect. It meant people could judge it. Misunderstand it. Speak ill of it.
I was ready but also scared of what readiness would cost me.
However, I knew I had to surrender to God and follow His leading in my life. This is where trust comes in. I also realized the message God gave me wouldn't ready anyone if I didn't release it...even as imperfect as I felt it was.
Purpose can’t move while you’re holding it hostage.
So one day, with doubts running through my mind, I hit publish because I knew God would honor my trust.
I release my arrow. Not perfectly. Definitely not confidently. But faithfully because I knew that surrender and trust are always the wise choice.
And that’s all a release ever asks of you.
🎯Purpose Doesn’t Activate Until You Let Go
We often think clarity is the finish line because we believe it's the moment we finally “know” where God is leading us, but clarity alone doesn’t change anything.
Purpose comes alive the moment you make a move.
The moment the arrow actually leaves your grip.
Which means the scariest part of stepping into your purpose is not the preparation, but the risk of letting it go.
The moment you let go…
faith activates and grows
momentum begins
opportunity unfolds
purpose shifts from internal to external
You don’t see impact while holding the arrow.
You see the impact once you've released it.
🌿Why So Many People Get Stuck Right Here
People don’t stay stuck because they lack purpose.
They stay stuck because they fear what will happen when purpose becomes visible.
Releasing means:
stepping into rooms where you feel unqualified
speaking when you’re used to staying silent
trying something with no guarantees
risking criticism, failure, or even success
That’s the part no one teaches us:
Success can be just as scary as failure, because both require courage you may not believe you have.
But you do.
The release is not something you grow into — it’s something you step into. It requires trust and courage.... massive amounts of courage.
Have I not commanded you?
Be strong and courageous.
Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged,
for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go
Joshua 1:9, NIV
🌿If You’re Standing in the Release Right Now
Maybe you’re here right now.
You know you’re called to more. You feel the pull.
The aim is clear, or at least clearer than before.
And yet… you’re hesitating.
If that’s you, hear this:
You don’t need perfection. You just need the courage to let go.
The release is where faith becomes action.
Remember: "Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead." James 2:17, NIV
Your arrow — your purpose — has somewhere to go.
🎯Reflection for the Week
Ask yourself:
What “arrow” have I been holding onto because releasing it feels scary?
Where am I waiting to feel ready instead of choosing to move?
What is one small act of release I can take this week?
Even the smallest release creates movement.
🙏A Prayer of Alignment
“God, give me courage to release what You’ve placed in my hands.
Calm my fear of what might happen after I let go.
Help me trust that You guide my purpose once it leaves my grip.
Strengthen my heart to step forward with faith,
and remind me that movement begins with release.”
Next Monday, we move into The Flight. Tthe part of the journey that no longer depends on your control. It’s where your purpose travels farther than you imagined, carried by the One who released you.
Until then, breathe in courage…
and let go when the moment comes.
With love,
Andrea John
