in Proverbs 31

For years, Proverbs 31 felt overwhelming to me. I would read about this woman and notice all the ways I thought I was falling short.

While preparing another episode, I discovered something about the passage’s structure that invited me to look again. Proverbs 31:10–31 is an acrostic poem. Its twenty-two verses follow the letters of the Hebrew alphabet.

That pattern is easy to miss when we read in English. Seeing it helped me step back from the individual activities and consider the woman being described as a whole.

Seeing the whole portrait

In this episode, I explore that structure and the different perspective it opened up for me. I also look at the language of valor and the tradition of singing this passage as a blessing.

Those conversations connect to a question at the heart of In Her Image: how do we read these words in a way that helps us understand who God created us to be?

It is a question worth carrying into our everyday lives. We can become so focused on what we think we should be doing that we overlook the qualities already finding expression in us.

A different way to read this week

Try returning to Proverbs 31:10–31 with a little room to pause. Read the passage as a whole before considering each verse individually.

Notice what you feel as you read. Where do you recognize love, creativity, care, strength, or wisdom? Which qualities can you see taking shape in your own life?

You might recognize one in the way you listen to someone, care for your family, approach your work, or respond to a difficult moment. Write down a specific example, however ordinary it seems.

Which part of this portrait do you recognize in yourself?

Let that question begin a conversation with God. Give yourself space to notice and understand before rushing toward another task.
