Have You Ever Started Moving Forward, Only to Pull Back Too Soon?
Originally, I thought the next part of this journey would be The Flight. That's the title I had in the outline.
After all, once the arrow is released, it’s in motion. It’s moving toward the target. That feels like the natural next step.
But as I've been refamiliarizing myself with the mechanics and technique of archery, I realized I was missing a significant step that comes right after the release.
In archery, and also in life, the release isn’t the end of the shot because the arrow’s flight isn’t the only thing that determines where it lands.
There’s a moment that comes immediately after the release that matters just as much as everything before it.
The follow-through.
It’s subtle, often overlooked, and easy to rush past, but it’s essential.
🌿 The Moment After You Let Go
In archery, follow-through is the posture you hold after the arrow leaves the string. The archer doesn’t drop the bow, shift their stance, or rush to see where the arrow landed. They remain steady. Eyes forward. Body aligned. Breath controlled. On the outside, it may appear they are frozen.
Why? Because even after release, movement matters. A sudden shift can disrupt the shot. Consistency after release protects accuracy.
Life works the same way.
We often think the hardest part is getting clarity or finally having the courage to move forward. We assume that once we say yes, take the step, or release what we’ve been holding, the work is done.
But what happens after the decision matters deeply.
After you start the new job or publish the book or leave the relationship.
Follow-through happens after you step into the calling you prayed for
🎯 When I Released My First Book
When I published The Journey, I remember thinking the hardest part was over.
The writing was done and edits were complete.
The decision to put my story into the world had already been made.
The release felt huge.
But almost immediately, something else set in.
Fear. Insecurity. Doubt.
Questions lurked in my mind.
What if this doesn’t make sense to anyone?
What if this isn't what I'm supposed to share?
What if I was clearer in my head than I was on the page?
That was the follow-through moment.
The part where I could either stay aligned with why I released it in the first place or let insecurity rewrite the story. I had to decide whether I would stand steady after the release or start pulling back in fear.
Follow-through wasn’t about doing more. It was about staying grounded in the truth that led me there.
🌿 Why Follow-Through Requires Trust
Follow-through demands trust because it removes the illusion of control.
Once the arrow is released, the archer cannot chase it.
Once purpose is set in motion, you cannot micromanage the outcome.
All you can do is remain aligned.
That’s uncomfortable for many of us.
We want reassurance and confirmation...and more confirmation.
We want immediate evidence that the release was worth it.
Alignment after release looks like restraint, not reaction.
It looks like staying rooted when you want to explain yourself.
When the applause is quiet, It looks like forward motion.
It looks like not rewriting your decision the moment doubt whispers.
Follow-through is the discipline of not abandoning yourself after you step forward.
🎯 The Danger of Skipping This Step
When we rush past follow-through, we often sabotage what we just released by second-guessing or overcorrecting. If you're anything like me, you may retreat emotionally or disengage spiritually as a protective mechanism. Not because we were wrong to release, but because we weren’t prepared for the vulnerability that followed.
Follow-through keeps you present. It keeps you steady.
It keeps you aligned with the posture that made the release possible.
It’s the quiet faith that says, “I will remain here, even if the outcome unfolds slowly.”
🌿 Reflection for the Week
Consider where you are right now.
Have you recently released something—made a decision, taken a step, stepped into a new season—and now feel unsure about what comes next?
Ask yourself:
Am I staying aligned after the release, or am I rushing to control the outcome?
What does it look like to remain steady in this season instead of pulling back?
How can I honor what I said yes to by how I show up now?
Follow-through isn’t passive.
It’s intentional presence.
🙏 A Prayer of Alignment
“God, help me remain steady after the release.
When doubt rises or fear whispers, remind me why I stepped forward.
Teach me to trust You not only in the decision, but in what follows.
Help me stay aligned in posture, heart, and focus,
knowing You are faithful to complete what You’ve begun.”
Next week, we will move into The Flight—the unfolding journey of purpose once it’s fully in motion, shaped by trust, endurance, and faith beyond your control.
But for now, stay here. Hold your posture. Keep your eyes forward.
And remember, what you do after the release matters more than you think.
With love,
